In a rare moment of corporate honesty, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has admitted something about the Surface RT that you probably already knew: Microsoft made too many of them.
Speaking at internal town hall event earlier this week, Ballmer confessed that Microsoft misjudged the market for the Surface RT, as The Verge reports. That mistake cost the company and it shareholders at least $900 million.
Reception to the Surface RT has been so tepid since its October launch that Microsoft was forced to cut the price of the device by $150, in the hopes of sparking sales.
But Microsoft isn’t giving up on the device just yet. As the comapny confirmed at its Worldwide Partner Conference earlier this month, it’s already working on a follow-up to the Surface RT, which will hopefully come without the issues that plagued its predecessor.
Alongside discussion of the Surface RT, Ballmer also spoke about Windows device sales as a whole. His unsurprising take? “We’re not selling as many Windows devices as we want to,” he said.
